In BalticSeaH2 project, Aalto is represented by Department of Industrial Engineering and Management. We will focus on studying the use of platform economy to boost the growth in the hydrogen valley. While society often rightfully views platform economy as a threat and has traditionally focused on regulation, BalticSeaH2 project provides an exciting opportunity to study how platform economy and its growth engine, network effects, can be leveraged for good and virtuous purposes, in this case winning the market for low-emission hydrogen.

ABB’s broad portfolio includes services and products with full system integration throughout the full value chain of hydrogen: from hydrogen production, transportation and storage to consumption in the end-user site. Offering consists of, e.g., electrification and automation solutions, system-level energy optimization models, electric motors and generators, and power supplies for electrolyzers.

While ABB develops the green hydrogen production technologies, our focus in the framework of the BalticSeaH2 project is the work package for hydrogen consumption uses cases (WP4). In this context, ABB develops and demonstrates MW-class fuel cell solutions that enable emission-free maritime transport in collaboration with the project partners.

ABB also leads the effort to maximize the value of sector integration (WP5). Here, the key objective is to optimize the interplay between the various sectors of the hydrogen valley and the entire hydrogen value chain in terms of energy efficiency, performance, and total cost of ownership using digital platforms.

The Baltic Innovation Agency (BIA) is an innovation management company, helping to connect ideas, people, and resources. BIA has been involved with the BalticSeaH2 project from the very beginning, helping to draft the proposal that was ultimately successful. Within the project, BIA is responsible for ensuring the uptake and continued use of the project results through exploitation and replication activities. This includes identifying the key exploitable results of the project, developing a long-term plan for the continued use of those results, and creating a replication toolkit as a learning tool for other H2 stakeholders to use as a reference when developing H2 solutions in their country or region. Our team is excited to be a part of this impactful project and we look forward to scaling our good work in the Baltic Sea Region and beyond.

We are accelerating the transformation to a circular economy of polyolefins and expanding our geographical footprint to better serve our customers around the globe.

In BalticSeaH2 framework, Borealis will be leading Hydrogen consumption use cases in industry section (Task 4.1). Borealis, during the transformation from fossil into sustainable feedstock, will need hydrogen both in enabling the  purification of oxygen rich bio-based chemicals (e.g. hydrogenation operation) and as a building block of chemicals for synthetic feedstock (CO2 to chemicals via CCU). In addition,  while developing the emission free cracking technology, the methane produced in the furnaces can be valorized with the option to produce hydrogen. Furthermore, while the hydrogen economy will evolve, hydrogen networks are needed and plastic pipes may offer versatile and sustainable material solutions for the network infrastructure.

Ballard is a world leader in the development, manufacture, sale, and servicing of PEM hydrogen fuel cells. With more than 44 years of experience, Ballard represent decades of innovation and engineering leadership in clean energy solutions. Our zero-emission fuel cell technology powers buses, trucks, trains, and ships, as well as stationary power systems.

For one of the cases within the BalticSeaH2 project, Ballard has teamed up with ABB, to design, integrate and install a containerized 600kW stationary fuel cell system.

Three of Ballard’s 200kW FCwave™ fuel cell modules, certified by DNV and Lloyds Register, will be installed in the container solution. FCwave™ is built for the marine industry and is modular and scalable from 200kW to MW level. It is therefore a future-proof technology that can adapt to current and future operating requirements.

The system will initially be demonstrated as a 600kW port side application, but the aim is to make the container solution usable both onboard a ship and as a stationary application, thus showing the scalability and flexibility of a fuel cell system. Delivering a complete “plug-and-play” solution will show an enormous benefit for system integrators and showcase how zero emission technologies can be integrated in real life operation.

Convion Oy is a leader in fuel cell and electrolyser systems based on solid oxide cell technology. Convion commercializes fuel-flexible fuel cell co-generation systems for distributed power generation and steam electrolysis systems for industrial applications.

High efficiency solid oxide cell technology together with Convion’s uncompromising system technology facilitate highest-in-class efficiency in green hydrogen production, minimizing hydrogen cost. Convion’s system platform makes possible operating the same system in both electrolysis and power generation modes. Bi-directional operability (rSOC) facilitates maximizing value of the system by coinciding hydrogen production with hours of low-cost electricity.

In BalticSeaH2, Cybernetica will Integrate complex industrial systems and creates fully digitalized system. Cybernetica has long-lasting experience on implementing secure and scalable IT software solutions in Energy sector.

Energy Cluster Denmark is Denmark’s cluster organization for the entire energy sector. The vision is for Denmark to be a leading green nation in the development and demonstration of innovative and global energy solutions. Energy Cluster Denmark is a neutral, value-creating and member-driven innovation platform for establishing and facilitating innovation collaborations between small and large companies, knowledge institutions and public players throughout the energy sector. Energy Cluster Denmark is shaped by the industry and driven by the need for a strong focal point for innovation, which is crucial to ensure a competitive Danish energy sector. Energy Cluster Denmark contributes to accelerating the green transition and CO₂ reduction by developing new world-leading technological solutions across energy areas and through sector coupling. Therefore, as a cluster organization, we support Danish companies and knowledge institutions’ participation in international innovation activities.

In Baltic Sea H2 Valley, Energy Cluster Denmark contributes to several tasks with focus on social acceptance, stakeholder engagement and replicability of the project. With Denmark’s role as a Connected Valley in the project, Energy Cluster Denmark will also be involved in many C&D activities.

Energiforsk is a Swedish politically neutral research and knowledge company that initiates, coordinates, and conducts energy research and analyses in favour of a robust and sustainable energy system. Energiforsk’s research is industry-relevant and demand-driven and encompasses all areas of the energy sector. Our research portfolio includes the research program ”The Role of Hydrogen in the Energy and Climate Transition” which aims to increase knowledge of the role of hydrogen in the energy and climate transition.

Energiforsk has an important knowledge-bridging role in the BalticSeaH2 project and is specifically responsible for the dissemination and communication of results and learnings from the project to Swedish actors.

Estonian Hydrogen Cluster (EHC) supports establishing green hydrogen value chains in Estonia, the Baltic States and in Europe. We bring together public and private sector stakeholders to develop a framework for production and use of green hydrogen in Estonia, as well as looking for and developing business opportunities for Estonian companies through networking, events and knowledge sharing.

Within BalticSeaH2, EHC is the lead on driving impact creation and replication of the valleys, in addition to supporting several other activities.

Elcogen is a developer and manufacturer of Solid Oxide Cell (SOC) technology – an efficient solution for green hydrogen production through electrolysis and emission-free power generation with fuel cells. We supply the core technology that sits at the heart of energy security and transition away from fossil fuels.

Elcogen’s SOC technology is flexible and can be applied to a broad range of residential, industrial, and commercial applications, enabling multiple types of systems to produce and use green energy.

Elcogen Group consists of Elcogen OY in Finland and Elcogen AS in Estonia. Elcogen OY focuses on the development, sales and pilot production of SOC stacks and modules for both fuel cell and electrolyser applications.

Currently, Elcogen OY employs more than 30 persons, with largest team working in the R&D activities. SOC stack pilot production utilizes European supply chain for different stack components, however stack assembly and end-of-line testing are made in house.

In the BalticSeaH2 project, Elcogen OY focuses on development and production of reversible SOC (rSOC) technology together with project partner Convion. Elcogen OY’s rSOC stacks will be operated at Convion and Elcogen OY utilizes its existing SOC test infrastructure to develop and optimize the technology based on test run feedback.

Elomatic is an international consulting and engineering company that provides top-level expert services, products and turnkey solutions to process, machinery, marine, energy and pharmaceutical industries. We are focused on continuous improvement and sustainable development, and we are committed to design solutions that increase the wellbeing of people and the environment. Established in 1970, Elomatic employs 1,300 professionals, and has customers in more than 80 countries across the globe.

In BalticSeaH2, the primary focus of Elomatic is to act as a consulting and engineering partner in Green North Energy’s project to explore and implement green ammonia production. To achieve this, the tasks include for example studying the global ammonia market, as well as the feasibility of different production possibilities. Additionally, the aim is to design and develop operational models, systems and tools for efficient hydrogen and ammonia production and distribution. The combination of understanding the ammonia market needs as well as implementing efficient operations, the advancement of green ammonia production can be done in an impactful and sustainable way.

Energy Valley is an industry-driven technology cluster and has status as a Norwegian Center of Expertise (NCE) in Energy Technology. The mandate is to accelerate the energy transformation and foster unique cross-industry collaborations to create value and advance innovative technologies in sustainable energy. Energy Valley has close to 120 active members in the capital region of Norway.

In BalticSeaH2, Energy Valley leads the Norway specific Connected Valley activities.

Flexens Oy Ab is a project developer implementing Power-to-X technologies to enable societies to run on a 100 % renewable energy mix. Flexens was founded in 2018 to capitalise on the skills and capabilities created in building the world-leading RES testbed and demo, Smart Energy Åland, to capture the rapidly growing demand for renewable energy systems. Flexens has a solid commercial pipeline with substantial foreseen capacity in Finland and abroad.

In the BalticSeaH2 project, Flexens is part of many different WPs and tasks. The main contributions are in WP3 and WP4, addressing both the production and consumption of hydrogen. The work ranges from studying the direct use of hydrogen in ships and hydrogen distribution, to mapping renewable energy sources in Finland and assessing the potential of hydrogen production from offshore wind farms.

Gasgrid Finland is a Finnish state-owned company and transmission system operator (TSO) with system responsibility for the natural gas transmission system in Finland. Gasgrid owns and operates the Finnish gas transmission system across Southern Finland. The Finnish gas network is connected to the Estonia, Baltic and European gas infrastructure and market through the Baltic connector cross-border pipeline. The Finnish government has given Gasgrid the task of promoting the development of the national hydrogen network, international infrastructure cooperation, and the hydrogen market in the Baltic Sea Region. Gasgrid Finland is also a part of the European Hydrogen Backbone initiative.

As the Valley Coordinator of the BalticSeaH2 project, Gasgrid Finland steers the development of the hydrogen economy in the Main Valley between Southern Finland and Estonia. Furthermore, Gasgrid Finland contributes to the establishment of the hydrogen valley by advancing hydrogen infrastructure and market development, developing pipeline connection principles for hydrogen producers and consumers, and studying hydrogen quality requirements. Gasgrid Finland will establish a development platform for market actors and create a picture of the market model.

Green North Energy is driving the rise of the hydrogen economy and its downstream value chain by actively developing cutting-edge projects to produce green hydrogen and ammonia. We are committed to the successful realization of our flagship site in Naantali, while actively seeking new opportunities for scalable growth. By 2030, we aim to have three to four sites in operation or under development – achieving a total electrolyser capacity of 1 GWe.

In BalticSeaH2, the primary focus of Green North Energy is to explore and implement green ammonia production. Green-Tech Cluster or Green and Smart Technology Cluster (GSTC) is organization developed for cross-sectoral cooperation bringing together companies, educational and research institutions, as well as other organizations that partly or fully operate in the industries of green and smart technologies.

The cluster includes industries important to the sustainable development of Latvia, which also are priority sectors of smart specialization strategy: mechanical engineering and engineering, information, and communication technology and space technology, energy-efficient buildings, efficient production and environmentally-friendly raw materials. This synergy ensures efficient use of available resources and allows to achieve the most efficient development of Latvian economic environment.

Cluster brings together one of the fastest growing companies with a significant share of exports and potential for development of the Latvian economy in priority sectors.

Cluster operates vectors of Future Mobility, Smart Manufacturing and Green Resources, Energy Efficient Buildings and lately also in Hydrogen technologies and ecosystems.

As a project partner in BalticSeaH2, GSTC is leading study activities for green Ammonia production/storage and handling in Latvia and potential for utilization of existing Ventspils ammonia terminal as a future Green Ammonia bunkering hub.

Hendrikson DGE is a consulting firm specializing in environmental management and spatial planning. We provide high-quality services to businesses and government agencies in Estonia and worldwide. Our work spans both local and national levels.

At Hendrikson DGE, we have a dedicated team of over 30 experienced experts who are leaders in their respective fields. These experts not only offer their expertise to our clients but also play an active role in knowledge sharing. They organize training programs and courses in collaboration with universities and professional organizations, and they actively participate in discussions related to legislative matters.

A noteworthy achievement is that Hendrikson DGE’s experts were the driving force behind the establishment of the Estonian Association of Spatial Planners in 2002 and the Estonian Association of Impact Assessment in the same year. These milestones highlight our deep commitment to the advancement of these fields.

Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that Hendrikson DGE is a proud member of the international DGE Group, enabling us to engage with a diverse clientele from around  the world.

In the BalticSeaH2 project, Hendrikson DGE will contribute by mapping and evaluating potential sites for hydrogen production.

Helen is a Finnish energy company based in Helsinki. We are dedicated to developing a smarter, carbon-neutral energy system that enables everyone to produce, use and save energy with respect for the environment. Our goal is to achieve carbon neutrality in our energy production by 2030. Hydrogen is foreseen to play a pivotal role in our energy system.

In the BalticSeaH2 project, Helen is developing the 3H2 – Helsinki Hydrogen Hub pilot plant, which integrates hydrogen production with electricity, heating, transport, and energy storage systems. The primary use of the hydrogen produced in the pilot plant, using wind and solar electricity, is to serve as a fuel for heavy transport. Plans are underway to establish the first hydrogen refuelling station in the capital area within the hydrogen production area. Furthermore, the hydrogen can be supplied to various industrial applications through container delivery.

The IWEN Energy Institute gGmbH is a non-profit organization and an affiliated institute of the University of Rostock (Germany). IWEN Energy Institute specializes in promoting applied and cooperative research on both national and international levels. The focus areas include decentralized energy supply systems based on renewable energies, wind energy (measurement) technology, and technology transfer and management for the creation of centers for renewable energies and hydrogen. IWEN possesses extensive knowledge and expertise in energy technologies and energy storage, with a particular emphasis on the role of hydrogen as an energy carrier. IWEN works to accelerate the adoption of renewable energies and translate technological innovations into practical applications.

IWEN plays a pivotal role in the “HyTechHafen” initiative, overseeing the planned installation of 100 MW of electrolyser capacity. Their responsibilities include coordinating application processes, establishing European connections, and providing advisory support for the Rostock IPCEI application.

Participation and Contribution to the BalticSeaH2 Project

As Germany’s exclusive representative for the local hydrogen valley in the BalticSeaH2 project, IWEN Energy Institute plays a pivotal role in core work packages. In WP7, they substantially contribute to analyzing the hydrogen market and developing strategic growth plans. In WP2, IWEN provides valuable expertise, analyzing conditions in Germany’s H2 valley. Their involvement also extends to WP6, actively participating in knowledge sharing and C&D activities. Additionally, they contribute to knowledge acquisition in WP5, focusing on valley information concerning renewable energy for hydrogen production.

Neste creates solutions for combating climate change and accelerating a shift to a circular economy.

We refine waste, residues and innovative raw materials into renewable fuels and sustainable feedstock for plastics and other materials. Our aim is to become a global leader in renewable and circular solutions. Focus on renewable hydrogen is an essential part of Neste’s strategy and our goal to reach carbon neutral production by 2035. Neste is the world’s leading producer of sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel and is developing chemical recycling to combat the plastic waste challenge. Our ambition is to make the Porvoo oil refinery in Finland the most sustainable refinery in Europe by 2030.

At the moment, we are working on renewable hydrogen projects to decrease the carbon footprint of our refineries and to offer our customers high-quality fuels with low carbon intensity. As a green transition forerunner, we at Neste contribute to the European hydrogen value chain by deploying concrete, commercially viable technologies at scale. Together with our partners we are excited to continue our mission and create a healthier planet for our children.

Neste is an Associated Partner in the BalticSeaH2 consortium.

The Lithuanian hydrogen energy association (VEA) is a non-profit organization which involves companies, scholars from research institutes and universities, which works on hydrogen-related area including scientific investigation, R&D, education, etc. The main aim of our association is to consolidate various Lithuanian organizations interested in hydrogen and promote its development in production, storage, transportation, and various application areas.

Hydrogen energy association at Lithuania is a member or three international and one national platforms, which combine strongest hydrogen-energy-related groups from Lithuania, Europe or even the whole world. Association is an official representative of the EHO (European H₂ Observatory), initiative to provide relevant information for interested stakeholders in the sector in Europe.

In BalticSeaH₂, VEA will focus mainly on implementation of WP2, WP7 and WP8 activities. The Role of VEA will cover communication and dissemination, social awareness and acceptance activities, collection and sharing of information, cooperation and networking and contributing to the development of Valley Replication Toolkit.

Lhyfe is a European group devoted to energy transition, and a producer and supplier of green and renewable hydrogen. Its production sites and portfolio of projects intend to provide access to green and renewable hydrogen in industrial quantities and enable the creation of a virtuous energy model capable of decarbonising entire sectors of industry and transport.

In 2021, Lhyfe inaugurated the first industrial-scale green hydrogen production plant in the world to be interconnected with a wind farm. In 2022, Lhyfe inaugurated the first offshore green hydrogen production pilot platform in the world.

In BalticSeaH2 project, Lhyfe contributes to assessment of optimal factors for cost-efficient hydrogen production and sector coupling opportunities, based on our existing cases. Lhyfe is also responsible for the feasibility study for offshore hydrogen production within the project.

P2X Solutions Oy (P2X) stands as a Finnish limited liability company, established in 2020.

P2X is at the forefront of green hydrogen production and distribution in Finland, pioneering the cutting-edge P2X technology. Our ambitious vision extends beyond Finnish borders – we aim to usher in a new era in the Finnish hydrogen market, and later expand our operations into the Northern European and Baltic markets.

In BalticSeaH2, we will elevate system integration to a level that enables the seamless connection of multiple plants onto a unified platform. Our goal is to create a system that operates harmoniously across different energy markets, delivering tangible value to our customers by minimizing the production costs of hydrogen and synthetic fuels.

The Lower-Silesian Hydrogen Valley, situated in Wrocław, Poland, stands as a pioneering hub at the forefront of hydrogen-based innovation. This strategic initiative aims to foster a sustainable and resilient energy ecosystem within the region. Anchored in the Lower-Silesia, the Hydrogen Valley encompasses crucial elements of hydrogen value chain, including advanced hydrogen production facilities, storage infrastructure, utilisation of hydrogen in energy and industrial sector as well as promotion of emission-less mobility. By leveraging renewable energy sources, the valley facilitates the green production of hydrogen, contributing to the region’s commitment to carbon reduction. Moreover, the Hydrogen Valley integrates hydrogen into various sectors, spanning transportation with fuel cell vehicles and industrial applications, thereby promoting clean energy utilization. This holistic approach aligns with Poland’s broader efforts to transition towards a low-carbon economy and positions the Lower-Silesian Hydrogen Valley as a model for sustainable energy integration and innovation on a regional scale.

PowerUP Energy Technologies, an Estonian deeptech company, develops and produces high-quality and sustainable energy generation products. With more than 17 years of experience in fuel cell technology, PowerUP is an innovator in the fuel cell technology market. PowerUP’s hydrogen fuel cell generators are founded on cutting-edge proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell technology, renowned for its exceptional efficiency and eco-conscious power generation.

Being deeply committed to making the hydrogen of tomorrow the reality of today,  PowerUP’s vision is a world that runs on renewable energy with zero CO2 emissions, be it on the grid or off the grid while being a pioneer in the cleantech industry.

Under the BalticSeaH2 project, PowerUP will develop and test an energy system which includes a fuel cell and an electrolyser in one housing and can generate green hydrogen and clean electricity by the combination with renewable energy. The innovative solution will be applicable for using in either commercial or apartment buildings.

The Freeport of Riga is the largest port in Latvia by cargo volume and is ranked fifth among the leading ports in Baltic Sea region with 6% market share. The Freeport of Riga can accept and service cargo ships up to 244 m in length (cruise ships up to 300–320 m in length), with the maximum draft of 15.5 m.

The Freeport of Riga terminals, warehouses and open storage areas of the port, the technical and technological support, as well as the road and railway infrastructure have combined capacity to handle, store and transship up to 63 million tons of cargo annually.

36 stevedoring companies and 30 ship agent companies operated in the Freeport of Riga employing more than 4,000 people. The main cargo types handled at the Freeport of Riga are containers, various metals, timber, coal, fertilizers, chemical cargo and oil products. In 2021 21.5 million tons of various cargo were handled in the port, which is 50% were transit cargo. In 2022 11 months 19.41 million tons of cargo were handled.

Freeport of Riga is part of Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) by sea, rail (freight transport) and road. The Freeport of Riga is listed as a core maritime port in Annex II of the EU-Regulation 1315/2013, and it lies on the North Sea-Baltic TEN-T core network corridor. The EU-member country status provides free access to European markets and offers broad prospects for future development, considering the EU’s objective of creating new logistics chains based on maritime and rail transport.

Freeport of Riga is supporting EU green policy objectives and implementing multiple projects related to clean energy in the port, such as, developing solar park, supporting production and transshipment of H2 as well as introducting dual fuel workboat in the port.

In the BalticSeaH2 project Freeport of Riga is part of support valley and is responsible for developing an H2 business case for ports as well as investigating reconstruction of an existing diesel vessel to H2 of dual fuel solution.

Port of Roenne is the green centre of the Baltic Sea.

Since 2020, the port has hosted several offshore wind installation projects in the southern Baltic Sea. At the same time, the port has continuously been expanded to accommodate bigger and bigger offshore wind projects better.

In 2025, the port will have finished several expansion projects to create a future-proof port that can serve the offshore wind industry and, at the same time, serve the local community of the Danish Island of Bornholm.

Port of Roenne is a TEN-T Comprehensive port with almost 2 million passengers and 1.3 million tons of goods per annum. The port has five ISO certifications and was the first Danish port to be certified in Sustainable Development Goals.

Besides working with offshore wind, the port is deeply involved in transitioning the maritime industry to alternative fuels. Port of Roenne has hosted a REACTEU-funded study of the possibility of local production of green fuels for shipping based on Power-to-X technologies.

In the BalticSeaH2 project Port of Roenne is focused on how hydrogen and hydrogen derivates can be stored and bunkered in the port.

RISE is an independent, state-owned research institute. As an innovation partner for the entire society, we help develop technologies, products, services and processes contributing to a sustainable world and competitive industry. We do this in collaboration with and on behalf of the academia, private and public sector. We also have a particular focus on supporting small and medium-sized companies in their innovation processes.

Today, we have approx. 3,300 employees who work all over the country and in a number of foreign subsidiaries. We are researchers, technicians and other experts needed to develop innovations of tomorrow.

On a scientific basis, we help customers and partners adapt to and meet challenges, take a holistic approach to solve complex issues and strengthen their competitiveness. Skyborn is an accomplished global offshore wind developer and operator. Our capabilities cover the entire offshore wind value chain, including greenfield development, engineering and project design, procurement, financing, commercialization / corporate power purchase agreements, construction management, as well as operations and asset management. Since September 2022, Skyborn has been a portfolio company of Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), a world-leading independent global infrastructure investor with headquarters in New York, USA. We combine our significant offshore wind power industry experience with GIP’s financial strength and track record in renewable energy investments to promote offshore wind energy and to develop a world-leading independent power producer, powered by the winds of the oceans.

We have been pioneering the development of offshore wind projects since 2000 with our entry into our home market Germany. Subsequent international activities focused on other European markets such as France, Sweden and Finland, as well as the Asia-Pacific region. Skyborn has successfully developed a total of six offshore wind projects across countries with a combined capacity of more than 2,000 MW, which are currently in operation or under construction. These include the German projects Baltic 1 (48.3 MW), Butendiek (288 MW), Nordergründe (111 MW) as well as the Taiwanese project Yunlin (640 MW) and the two French projects Fécamp (497 MW) and Calvados (450 MW).

For BalticSeaH2 project, Skyborn will provide inputs based on offshore wind and power-to-x projects experience to assess the optimal locations for hydrogen production, taking into considerations various aspects and evaluate means of cost-efficient hydrogen production.

Solarstone transforms buildings into modern PV plants by challenging traditional building concepts. We believe that small scale PV installations play a key role in the future of housing and in transition to renewable energy. Locally produced and consumed energy is the most viable and sustainable way to combat climate and energy challenges. Our mission is to promote sustainable living and resource-efficient construction practices.

During the program Solarstone is working closely with partners in the program to provide the know-how and speciality of solar energy. The goal is to focus on green hydrogen production within the project.

The City of Tallinn aims to be climate-neutral by 2050, this objective is at the heart of the European Green Deal.

The Tallinn City Council has adopted two strategic documents addressing hydrogen as an alternative fuel in public transportation, those being The Climate Action Plan (SECAP) until 2030 and The Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan until 2035.

The use of hydrogen fuels in both industry and transport is certainly growing within the coming years. At the same time, there are a number of environmentally friendly alternatives. At the time, it is unclear what the modal split between different forms of transport and heating will be in urban mobility, and how large the share of hydrogen will be, but it, but the specificities of hydrogen deployment make it prudent to prepare.

The aim of the project for Tallinn is to:

• Consider the use of hydrogen in different modes of transportation, with a focus on public transport at city scale;
• Raising awareness and knowledge about hydrogen
• Gain experience as a local government in participating in hydrogen projects and understanding our role in the hydrogen economy chain

In the BalticSeaH2-project, RISE and Uppsala University will develop a virtual environment with a hydrogen bunkering station, utilizing an XR system (Extended Reality) to visualize risks and safety measures associated with hydrogen refueling.

Vantaa Energy is one of Finland’s largest urban energy companies. We are solving the biggest challenges of our time by ensuring that energy and limited resources are circulated as smartly as possible. We aim for carbon negativity in energy production in 2030. Emissions will be reduced through a number of projects, the most significant of which are the seasonal thermal energy storage facility, and various projects based on electric heating and waste heat. Achieving carbon negativity requires capturing carbon dioxide, which is currently being explored.  We are constantly innovating to ensure that the people of Vantaa have access to affordable, secure and sustainable energy and the related services now and in the future.

Within the scope of the BalticSeaH2 project, Vantaa Energy is planning to establish a hydrogen production Use Case and demonstrate the hydrogen utilization in the Energy Sector. Vantaa Energy also plans to conduct a large-scale fuel cell demonstration including buildings and equipment for systems integration and testing.

Viru Vesinik is devoted to developing green hydrogen projects in Estonia. This includes strategic analysis, safety and permitting, investor relations and funding and other activities needed for hydrogen production and consumption. In the BalticSeaH2 project, VV will map renewable energy production and the potential for using that energy for hydrogen production in the Baltic Sea Region.
