Investigating the Potential of Hydrogen Valleys – Takeaways from the workshop “Setting up Hydrogen Valleys in Europe”

On 5 October 2023, BalticSeaH2 project participated in a workshop, “Setting up Hydrogen Valleys in Europe,” organized by the Green Hysland project in hybrid mode, the onsite event taking place on Vlieland Island in Fryslân, in the Netherlands. The workshop focused on transformative strategies in Hydrogen Valley development through insights from experts engaged in practical Hydrogen Valley development.

The workshop provided an opportunity to learn about hydrogen valleys as a theoretical concept and the Mission Innovation Hydrogen Valley Platform. Practical insights were provided in four presentations on hydrogen valleys in development. Green Hysland project develops a hydrogen ecosystem on the Island of Mallorca. Using existing gas infrastructure, HEAVENN creates an integrated green hydrogen ecosystem in the Northern Netherlands. Asturias Hydrogen Valley in Spain boosts the region’s energy transition and combines existing infrastructure’s advantages. All these ongoing hydrogen valley projects provide valuable lessons learned to each other as the projects are at the beginning of their journey, such as BalticSeaH2.

Elina Mäki, representing Gasgrid Finland (the Valley Coordinator of BalticSeaH2), gave a presentation about the BalticSeaH2 project that started in June 2023. She highlighted the special features of the BalticSeaH2 Valley. BalticSeaH2 Valley utilizes the existing infrastructure in the Gulf of Finland – methane pipelines, electricity grid, and active marine traffic – to pioneer a large-scale cross-border hydrogen valley and hydrogen market between Southern Finland and Estonia. Furthermore, the project brings together necessary stakeholders along the whole value chain to demonstrate an efficient, highly sector-coupled system.
