BalticSeaH2 in one word: Collaborative

Kirsikka Kiviranta works at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and leads WP2 in the BalticSeaH2 project, which focuses on stakeholder engagement and co-creation. She holds an M.Sc. (Tech.) in Environmental Engineering from the University of Oulu and has worked as a Research Scientist at VTT since 2019.

Her research background includes renewable energy and circular economy solutions, but in recent years her work has centered on the role of hydrogen in the green transition. “The hydrogen transition is a complex societal challenge,” Kirsikka explains. “It can’t be solved by one company or sector alone. That’s why I’m excited to be part of a project that brings together such a broad and diverse group of partners.”

WP2 aims to engage stakeholders from across the hydrogen value chain—including industry, policymakers and citizens—and co-create shared visions for a just and sustainable hydrogen future in the Baltic Sea region. Kirsikka’s team also focuses on raising public awareness and exploring societal perceptions of hydrogen.

“One of our biggest challenges is aligning expectations across very different groups,” she says. “But that’s also what makes this work so rewarding. It helps us build a more complete picture that combines technical, economic, social and environmental perspectives.”

A personal highlight for Kirsikka has been leading creative workshops across the Baltic Sea region using the LEGO Serious Play® method. “Even top-level experts dove into creative play to build their hydrogen futures from LEGO bricks. I’m looking forward to seeing how this is received in other countries.”

Her advice for future professionals?

“Study what excites you and stay curious. The green transition needs people from all kinds of backgrounds.”
