Helen is actively engaged in fostering the use of hydrogen technologies as part of its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality in its energy production by 2030 and phasing out combustion-based energy production by 2040. Helen’s focus is on green hydrogen production using renewable energy sources, such as wind, solar and hydro power to run electrolysis and hydrogen production.
Helen, one of Finland’s largest energy companies, is committed to the clean transition, focusing on flexibility and profitability. As part of the BalticSeaH2 project, Helen promotes the wider deployment of hydrogen and hydrogen derivatives across society. Through this project, Helen strengthens its capabilities in new hydrogen business creation and creates vital systems for hydrogen production and optimisation.
Piloting hydrogen production
The 3H2 pilot project is Helen’s stepping stone into the hydrogen business. With over 100 years of experience in producing and delivering heat and electricity to its customers, Helen is now creating new business opportunities. The pilot aims to establish a hydrogen production facility in Vuosaari, Helsinki. The main use of the produced hydrogen will be in the transportation sector. Adjacent to the electrolyser plant, Vireon is set to construct a cutting-edge heavy-duty hydrogen refuelling station at one of Finland’s major logistics hubs.
The 3H2 project includes a 3 MW PEM electrolyser, transport container filling station, and a hydrogen refuelling station open to the public. Currently, the project is in the phase of detailed engineering. The overallschedule includes detailed design, permit processes, construction, and installation phases, with the goal of commissioning the hydrogen production facility by the end of 2026, and the refuelling station aiming to be operational by 2027.
The 3H2 pilot will also include the integration of waste heat into Helen’s district heating network using a heat pump. This approach not only improves the overall energy efficiency of the project but also contributes to Helen’s strategic goals by utilising waste heat that would otherwise be dissipated.
Creation of capabilities and digital solutions for sustainable hydrogen economy
Helen aims to build capabilities in several hydrogen economy related areas, including renewable electricity, waste heat utilisation, and carbon-neutral products, leveraging its substantial renewable energy portfolio and district heating network.
As an important part, Helen is developing advanced digital systems to support its new hydrogen business. These systems are designed to optimise the production, storage, and distribution of hydrogen, ensuring efficiency and reliability. The digital infrastructure includes real-time monitoring and data analytics tools that enhance operational performance and decision-making processes. As part of the BalticSeaH2 project, Helen is integrating these digital solutions to facilitate cross-border hydrogen trade and collaboration within the Baltic Sea region. Additionally, Helen participates in research and development programmes to advance hydrogen technology and works with government bodies to support policy development for hydrogen deployment.
