People Behind the Project: Elina Mäki

BalticSeaH2 in one word: Implementation
Elina Mäki is a Master of Science in energy technology and spent nearly a decade in research before transitioning into the hydrogen field. Her research background includes low-carbon energy systems, bioenergy, solar power and system flexibility—always with a focus on the broader clean energy transition.
Now working at Gasgrid Finland as an RDI Project Manager, Elina puts her research mindset to full use by supporting the development of hydrogen infrastructure in Finland and the Baltic Sea region. In BalticSeaH2, she coordinates the creation of Europe’s first large-scale cross-border hydrogen valley.
She also leads WP6, which develops a hydrogen market model that maximizes sector integration—especially between hydrogen and electricity. The work package addresses regulation, market design, business models and ultimately delivers a digital hydrogen marketplace platform.
“The most exciting and challenging part of WP6 is that we’re designing markets and systems that don’t yet exist,” Elina says. “We can draw from the existing methane market, but we also need to understand the deep integration with electricity systems.”
For her, one of the best parts of the project is the multidisciplinary team: “You’re constantly learning something new.”
Her advice to future professionals?
“Hydrogen transition challenges traditional roles. Be open-minded—recognize your strengths and think how you can apply them in innovative ways.”
