People Behind the Project: Susanna Kupiainen

Susanna Kupiainen

BalticSeaH2 in one word: Implementing

Susanna Kupiainen leads WP8 on communication, dissemination and exploitation in the BalticSeaH2 project. She has a master’s degree in social sciences with a focus on communication, governance and global politics—and a long-standing love of writing, speaking, and staying curious. “I always want to know absolutely everything that’s happening around me,” she says. “That’s a very useful trait in communication.”

Before joining CLIC Innovation, Susanna had worked in various communication roles but had no prior background in hydrogen or energy systems. “Luckily, being surrounded by energy experts is a fast-track learning experience—and a very inspiring one.”

In BalticSeaH2, she is responsible for ensuring the project’s visibility, strengthening its position as a recognised actor in the hydrogen economy, and supporting communication across the entire consortium. “Our job is to make this big, complex project understandable and engaging—not just to experts, but to the public as well.”

WP8 involves all 40 project partners, making internal coordination a challenge—but also a highlight. “The most rewarding moments are when someone brings me a topic they’re genuinely excited about, and we turn it into something powerful together.”

A personal memory? “Meeting everyone in person at the consortium meeting after months of email-only contact. It was surreal—and wonderful. We honestly have the nicest consortium ever.”

Her advice for future professionals?

“The hydrogen sector is growing rapidly and needs people from many different fields. If we want to shape the future, we need everyone.”
